God has made everything
beautiful for its own time.
He has planted eternity
in the human heart,
but even so, people cannot see
the whole scope of God's work
from beginning to end.
Upon completing a painting, the famed artist Marc Chagall would use God's perfection to authenticate his effort. Chagall once said, “When I am finishing a picture, I hold some God-made object up to it — a rock, a flower, the branch of a tree or my hand — as a kind of final test. If the painting stands up beside a thing man cannot make, the painting is authentic.” Don't base yourself upon the standards set by the world, comparing yourself to man-made achievements, man-made determinations of success or man-made determinations of beauty. Everything God created is sublime and beautiful - and that means you, too.

I really like that quote about holding a God-made object up to the art for comparison. Marc Chagall is definitely one of my favorite artists. Reading about him always makes me more interested in his work.
