I'd read about this monastery in Portugal that sits atop a 3,000 foot cliff reachable only by a basket with a single rope pulley. Visitors to the monastery ride in the basket and they are pulled up to the cliff by several strong men. One tourist visiting the site noticed that the rope was old and a bit worn, prompting him to ask, "So how often do you change the rope?" The monk in charge said, "Whenever it breaks."
